What is a gravel driveway crown?
A crown is the raised center of a gravel driveway. It slopes down to both edges so water runs off the sides instead of collecting in the middle. Federal gravel-road guidance recommends about half an inch of crown per foot of width (roughly 4%), and Penn State’s Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies recommends 4–6%. Your proposal states what your driveway needs.
Why does my driveway keep losing its crown?
Traffic, snowplows and settling slowly push stone to the outer edges. Without a light regrade now and then, the center sinks into a “bowl” that holds water.
Can you just add more stone to build the crown?
Adding stone without loosening the packed base underneath is a temporary fix. The new stone won't lock into the hardpan and washes away. We shape the base first.
