How to Handle a Gravel Driveway in Sagamore Hills
If you're on the terrace and the drive is merely rough, rework it. Lake Maumee left a gravel terrace here at about 800 feet, and terrace gravel is about as good as ground gets under a drive. The base usually holds; the surface loosens and washboards as its fines wear away. Drive Rake brings the old stone back up, mixes it back together and compacts it. If your drive reaches toward the Brandywine and washes out down its length, break the run. If water sits along the edges on either side of the line, give it an exit. Tires and the plow push stone into a lip along each side, and that lip holds water against the drive. We take it off and cut a shallow swale to an outlet, which is part of Drive Rebuild. On the terrace, a reshaped crown with Drive Restore, from $1,500, is often enough on its own, because the ground takes the water once it leaves the surface.
Where the drive meets the road, the pipe is the road authority's and yours, not ours. On a county highway the Summit County Engineer sizes it; on a state route, ODOT; on a township road, ask the township road department first, since Ohio lets trustees require a culvert permit. You may be on different sides of the same line. The Lake Maumee terrace drains fast and takes weight; a mile away the Brandywine ravine ground does neither. Two drives a short walk apart can fail for completely different reasons and need different work.
On the terrace, rarely; the old stone is usually there to be reworked. On the ravine side, much of your stone may have washed to the bottom, and it can often be brought back up. New stone goes where the base has failed or the fines are gone. You already paid for the stone once.
