How to Handle a Gravel Driveway in New Franklin
If puddles stand down the length of the drive, the drive has to make its own fall, because there's none in the ground. Traffic and time flatten the middle, and a flat middle on flat land holds every rain. It freezes and thaws in place, and the base under a puddle stays soft well into spring. We grade when the stone is damp and the ground below it has firmed, usually late spring onward, and fall is the time to reshape before the freeze. Grading a saturated drive in April only pushes stone into mud.

Lanes toward the city's share of the Portage Lakes carry boats, trailers and farm equipment on the same stone as the family car, and they rut in the wheel paths. Where the base has given way under those loads, Drive Rebuild with new stone is the fix. Late spring, once the ground firms, through fall is the working window, and fall work sends the drive into winter with its shape back.
Not for long. New stone spread over a flat drive follows the same flat shape, so the water sits in the same places and the new stone sinks where the old stone did. The puddles stop when the drive has a high middle and the edges let the water out. You already paid for the stone. It isn't the stone.
