Gravel Driveway Repair
Richmond Heights, OH
Richmond Heights sits where the flat lake plain meets the start of the escarpment rise, and most of its driveways are paved. The gravel ones, usually rear drives, parking pads, access lanes and the odd longer drive on a bigger lot, fail in two ways depending on the ground. On the flat northern clay loam, puddles sit and the stone turns soft and rutted; on the rising ground to the south, water runs down the stone and carries it off. The answers are to rework the surface and to reshape it so water leaves. A short run usually comes in at $1,050 for Drive Rake or $1,500 for Drive Restore, setup fee of $300 included. Ask the city building department before adding gravel. Guarantee terms come in the proposal.

We fix your driveway, and the reason it keeps breaking.
Potholes, ruts and puddles come back where the water sits. We find where the water goes and fix that first, then rework the stone that is already there and compact it.
A Grade Scan is $149: a measured survey of your driveway’s grade and drainage. Every job is quoted in writing and carries a written guarantee.
How to Handle a Gravel Driveway in Richmond Heights
If your gravel is on the flat northern ground and holds puddles for days, it needs a crown. Lake-plain clay loam drains slowly and has almost no natural fall, so the only thing moving rain off the stone is the shape it's given. Drive Restore builds that shape out of the stone already there and compacts it twice. Without it, the puddles soak in and the next car turns them into ruts.
If your lot rises to the south and the gravel washes after storms, turn the water sooner. On the escarpment side, water runs along a drive or pad instead of across it and takes the finer stone with it. We reshape so it crosses and leaves, pull washed stone back from the low end, and compact the lot. It's usually the same Drive Restore work, pointed at a different problem.
If the surface is just rough, rework it. Pads and rear drives that get light use often need only Drive Rake: loosen, pull out the weeds and soil that built up in the stone, remix the fines and compact. Where part of a lot sits on one of the old sandy beach ridges that cross the north of the county, that stretch drains better and often needs the least work. We'll tell you which kind of ground each part of your gravel sits on before suggesting a tier.
If you're thinking of adding or enlarging gravel, ask first. Codes in built-out cities like this one can set what a driveway or parking area may be surfaced with and how big it can be. The Richmond Heights building department has the answer for your lot, and the city's service department handles pipes and anything at the street. We'd rather you have that answer before we give you a price.
What We Fix in Richmond Heights, OH
Lake-Plain Puddle Fix
On flat, slow-draining clay loam, Drive Restore reshapes the existing stone into a crown and compacts it twice, so rain runs off to the sides instead of sitting in the tire tracks for days after every storm.
Escarpment-Side Wash Repair
Where a lot rises and water runs the length of the gravel, we pull washed stone back up, reshape it so water crosses and leaves, and compact it so the finer stone stays put. Usually Drive Restore work.
Weedy Pad Rework
Drive Rake pulls out the weeds and built-up soil, remixes the stone with its fines and compacts it. Right-sized for pads and rear drives that are rough but still have enough stone on them.

FAQ — Richmond Heights, OH
The floor is $1,050 for Drive Rake, and $1,500 for Drive Restore; both include the $300 setup fee. Most pads and rear drives in Richmond Heights are small enough to price at one of those. Larger or longer drives are priced by size and condition, in writing, before we set a date.
Ask the Richmond Heights building department before adding, widening or resurfacing. Suburban codes can limit what a driveway or parking area may be surfaced with. We won't tell you it's fine without knowing. Pipes and work at the street are for the city's service department, and call 811 before any digging.
Later than on the rising ground. Flat lake-plain clay stays wet well after the thaw, and stone compacted onto it then gets pressed in. Sloped lots to the south often firm up weeks earlier. We'll look at your lot and book for when the ground can take it, and fall works well on either.
Richmond Heights crosses the line between flat lake-plain clay and the rise of the escarpment, and old sandy beach ridges cross the north of the county too. Two lots close together can sit on quite different ground. That's geology, not anything you did to the drive.
A 90-day workmanship warranty, in writing, on every tier. It covers defects in how the stone was graded, compacted and placed. Our proposal terms list the exclusions, including plow damage and customer modifications. We'll also tell you what light upkeep keeps a pad on this ground shedding water.
